First Day in Nairobi

Saturday, July 27

Tyler and I are partially recovered after a good night sleep. Actually we overslept, missed breakast, and we were late for our meeting with Dr. Mailu. Tyler was very bummed about missing breakfast. Thankfully he was also delayed and the good people at Amani Gardens made us a full breakfast. So it worked out and we needed the extra . We are thankful for these small gestures of grace.

It was a fruitful meeting with Dr. Mailu. He recently suffered a herniated cervical disk which caused severe pain and weakness in his right arm. He is recovering but only recently returned to doing orthopedic surgery. He has been instrumental in helping Running The Race make connections and develop our ministry here in Kenya. We are planning to have another team return to Nairobi for the next Kenya Sports Medicine annual meeting. We have a shared goal of training more physios in sports medicine and a longitudinal training program for Kenyan athletic trainers. Ultimately we both see our skills as gifts to serve others for Christ. We have developed a solid friendship and brotherhood in Christ.

In the afternoon we had some time for a game drive at Nairobi National Park. The driver that picked us up from the airport was also a safari driver and he was much cheaper than any prices quoted online. We talked about reserving an afternoon game drive during our connection in London but we let it slip and we didn’t have Wifi on the flight from London to Nairobi. I didn’t think it would happen with our late arrival Friday night. This was Tyler’s first safari experience and only opportunity for this trip. I was not sure what to expect since we were so close to the city but it was a wonderful experience. I think this was another…but God moment.

God is good. He is at work even in the small things…a hot shower, sleep, breakfast, renewing friendships and a safari driver.
